We were talking about division and I asked her what 25 divided by 5 was. She just looked at me... blankly. Then she said, "I don't know".
I said count by 5's... 5, 10. She added the 15 and the 20. I said 25. (As you can tell, this wasn't going really well.) I held up one finger at a time and said, "5, 10, 15, 20, 25". (Now, I could tell that she was thinking, what does that have to do with anything???)
I then said, so 25 divided by 5 is... She said, "5?". So, seeing how she got that I surely thought this next one would be easy... So, I said, "therefore, 5 times 5 is?" Her reply, "1?", give her a look, "2?"...another look.
Then it happened! It was one of those light bulb moments. "Oh, 25, I get it!"
Her eyes got really big and she was SOOO excited! It is funny, that we have been going over this for a while and it finally just clicked! She finally figured out the relationship between multiplication and division.
It's days like this that are the most enjoyable and rewarding!
